Remembering Charlie Rich on His 83rd Birthday

Country singer Charlie Rich, nicknamed the Silver Fox, would have turned 83 years old today.

Before his passing in 1995, Rich supplied a number of hit songs through his 37-year career in music. After recording a few singles with Sun Records in the late 1950s, he finally earned a hit song with his 1960 ballad “Lonely Weekends.”

After finding little follow-up commercial success over the next few years, Rich took the advice of friend and famed producer Billy Sherrill and signed with Epic Records. He worked on evolving his sound, and quickly won over listeners with his pop-country ballads.

He earned a number one hit in 1973 with the now-classic track “Behind Closed Doors,” which jumpstarted a new era in music for Rich. His performance earned him CMA and ACM awards, as well as Grammy nomination that year. His follow-up single, “The Most Beautiful Girl,” also became a hit on both the country and pop charts. Rich officially became a crossover success, releasing a string of tracks that charted well on the charts for both genres.

After developing issues with drinking and the eventual decline in popularity for sweeping country ballads, Rich eventually stepped away from the industry. Although he continued to release many singles through the 1970s and 80s, no other release enjoyed as much success as “Behind Closed Doors.”

Charlie Rich passed away on July 25, 1995 at the age of 62. On this special day, take a moment to enjoy this special vintage performance of his most-beloved track.
