The Mavericks frontman, Raul Malo, recently posted a video on social media, giving an update on his health status. Currently, he is recovering from a December surgery, which successfully removed a liver tumor. Due to this, The Mavericks have canceled their appearance in the Sandy Beaches Cruise.

Malo posted the video on his Instagram page on January 8, apologizing for the sudden Mavericks concert cancellation. "Hey everyone, Raul Malo here. I wanted to catch you up on my health as we go through this journey. Some of you know that I had liver surgery on December 10th," Malo said. "They successfully removed the tumor from the liver and we're going into the fourth week of recovery and they said 'four to six weeks of recovery' which would, of course, take me into the timing of the cruise."

While he stated that he was feeling strong, he still felt discomfort. Malo even said that he is "nowhere near" performing shape. For him, currently, it is hard to hold his guitar to his body.
While The Mavericks did cancel their appearance, in Malo's post it was confirmed that other bands were to replace them. "The incredible Keb' Mo' and Tab Benoit have been added to the lineup to keep you dancing all night long," the post reads. "We appreciate your understanding & support and will see you on the water for next year's Sandy Beaches Cruise!"
Further Cancellations
Two days after the original video was posted, Raul Malo issued an update on January 10, with more concert cancellations. "Due to Raul's continued treatment schedule, he will unfortunately no longer be performing at SPACE January 31st & February 1st," the post read. "We're very sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding at this time."
In response to both his video and his update, Malo's followers expressed support and understanding. This is something that Malo previously acknowledged. He stated previously that he was thankful for the amount of love he has received since he started his cancer treatment. Doctors diagnosed him with cancer back in June 2024.
"You all have made me feel stronger than ever in spite of my weakened state," Malo said back in August 2024. "The love and compassion shown to me in the last month has not only been touching, it has been beautifully overwhelming. I thank you and my family thanks you."
