Rachel Maddow's Show Targeted By MSNBC For Cuts

It appears Joy Reid isn't the only one having their staff axed as MSNBC tells Rachel Maddow's staffers to start looking for work.

Videos by Wide Open Country

With ratings that have plummeted since the election and failed to pick back up, MSNBC is having to trim the fat. The first to go was Joy Reid, whose show The ReidOut was both controversial and outspoken. Only last week, her staffers were told they had time to pack their bags, the show was finished.

Now, Rachel Maddow, one of the network's most recognisable faces, is losing a ton of staff. In a report from the Guardian, the majority of staff working with Maddow have been let go. They have been given the option to apply for other jobs within the network or take severance pay.

Not all of Maddow's staff will be leaving, though; she will still need a team to run her show. Staying on for now will be executive producer Cory Gnazzo. She will also be retaining several other executive producers.

Rachael Maddow's Staff Part Of MSNBC Restructure

An insider, who spoke confidentially to the outlet, stated that the change to Maddow's staff didn't constitute layoffs. Instead, they said it was a reallocation of resources. The MSNBC network is evolving, and staff need to move around the company.

So, laying off staff or telling them to reapply without the idea of layoffs in mind insinuates there will be jobs for them in other sectors. However, whether this comes to fruition is a different matter. The network has had, understandably, declining ratings since the election.

In the past, MSNBC has been able to reallocate roles to their staff without having to cut positions. This shows a change in direction for the company. This has raised a number of concerns both with Rachel Maddow's ex-staff and others working for MSNBC.

For Joy Reid, there is no more space on the network for her left-leaning politics and outspoken opinions. What lays in wait for her in her career is anyone's guess. There is less space for her kind of opinions on mainstream outlets.

The staff that have been laid off from Maddow's show will be given priority pick over the newly available job that MSNBC claims to have created.

  1. Maureen O'Malley says:

I had so strongly depended on MSNBC for truth from a liberal perspective. Ratings are as much a function of people tuning out because the state of America is so nauseating. Joy Reid pulled no punches, and I loved her Black perspective. So sad MSNBC sold out.

  2. J Scott Read says:

MSNBC should report the news fairly and stay away from the lopsided partisan nonsense, that got them to this point in time.

  3. Elizabeth Peterson LaSalle says:

Interesting the MSNBC goes after the woman of color, rather than one of the males. Alex Wagner has also been demoted. Funny that we don't see any of the male members of the line-up getting the axe. Hmmmm . . . you don't think the administration at MSNBC is pandering to Trump? Nah, that can't be it. (note eyeroll)

  4. Jane Dawe says:

    Should have axed. Morning Joe!!!

  5. Carol T says:

Jonathon Capeheart (!), Jose Diaz-Balert, Katie Phang, Ayman Mohyeldin. All gone. All POC. ☹️

  6. FlCracker2 says:

Reid and her hyperbolic mental breakdowns each day brought the ratings down. It is all about the station making money.

  7. chapril says:

I think Chris Hayes got axed also

  8. Kathy L says:

I know I'm not watching MSNBC again.

  9. Bill Carter says:

You mean lopsided partisan nonsense like Fox News (the highest rated political network)? MSNBC is the balance we need to give us the other side, especially with FOX News having Trump on their side. If you don't want political opinion, then don't watch. Bet you don't see (lying) Fox as being lopsided. SMH

  10. Bill Carter says:

No, the breakdown was when Mika and Joe went to Trump's resort and kissed more than his ring. I believe the network was put on warning and they were sent back with their tails between their legs ane a warning to NBC. They have been coopted.

  11. Glenda Leatherman says:

    No he didn't. Still there.

  12. Glenda Leatherman says:

  13. I haven't watched since the election. I can only watch or read the news occasionally and small bits at a time. I cannot watch or listen to Trump at all.

Lopsided partisan nonsense??? You must be talking about FOX News!!

  20. chaka says:

    EXACTLY!!!

  21. John Barry says:

If the network wants to fire someone, it should be whomever suggested that Joe & Mika go and kiss the ring. That single event caused me to go from a constant viewer, to one who watches a couple bits of something each month. I know there are many others who were as put-off by this as I was.

Shame they took it out on truth-tellers, and I hope for the very best for each of those whom they cast aside, and for those who worked behind the scenes on their shows.

  22. robinkilgore says:

MEIDAS NETWORK is AMAZING and I know that they've reached out to Joy Reid to offer her their platform, and I'm hoping that she'll take them up on it. They have a very large and growing viewership. ??❤️??

  23. Art Thibodeaux says:

We didn't they let Joe and Mika go? They went down on bended knee.

  24. Pat Crowley says:

  26. John Schulz says:

Wow, what a moron.. Joy Reid is and was the most bigoted racist, next only to that slim ball, Al Sharpton !

  27. Loretta Mitson says:

I love Joy Reid. She is honest and refreshing. She has integrity. She tells it like it is. I am so done with MSNBC! Wow, I wonder if the CEO and top administrators took a pay cut?

  28. imakemyowndecisions says:

Just be because they let her go does mean she cannot speak her opinion! Comcast owns MSNBC, so there you go!

  29. mary morgan says:

You racists always call poc racists.

  30. mary morgan says:

Absolutely. But, I had backed off before Joe and Mika kissed his a$$ because I was sickof them not fact checking Trump. After the election, I stopped watching them completely.

  31. TXreader says:

Loved her style...she'll be missed by so many

  32. Tan Nott says:

I turn the damn TV off.I will listen to Joy on YouTube.

  37. Linda Hales says:

Meidas is my go to for truth in reporting. It's the only one that doesn't end with a question mark!

  38. Linda Hales says:

Fox is political but not even a legitimate news network. No surprise there!

  49. Sally Davis says:

MSNBC keeps us free of the garbage-laden smog out of DC! GRATEFUL!!

  50. Cindy Gehm says:

I was just starting to truly appreciate Alex Wagner when Rachel (whom I also enjoy) was given the 5 day per week slot. Alex seems honest and forthright in her reporting. She had become my favorite. My husband and I slowed down our watching of MSNBC after Trump was elected because the constant bombardment of the news is hard the psyche. That being said, we still keep up with what's happening.

  51. Judy Eastham says:

I will watch Maddow but that is it.

  52. Northern Girl says:

  54. Neil Cordry says:

apparently ,most people never watched this collection of loons before either !!!

  55. Kathy L says:

Too many idiots watching Fox News

  56. lefty_lib1 says:

It was a shock to learn of Reid's end on MSNBC. I believe the new owner of MSNBC is doing a disservice to its viewers by ridding the station of some of the best broadcasters they had. I also believed that the trio replacing Reid's hour was a permanent replacement (so to speak), and that it would be a trio hour not one of the three rotating in and out. What a disappointment there too. I'm tiring of the evaluations and discussions over one topic, rather than straight news with some editorial input. If they're going to make changes at MSNBC, let's get back to covering the news that comes in throughout the day, and not just repeat most of what was covered earlier in the day throughout the evening too. I understand when it's a very important topic and each host wants to add their input, but there are literally hundreds of topics to cover each day. Let's expand more, please.

  57. lefty_lib1 says:

    "Enemies closer..."

  58. lefty_lib1 says:

Rachael of course, Stephanie Rule (sp?) Ali Belshi, Ari, Lawrence... still all worth listening to (sorry for the misspellings).

  77. Patricia Webb says:

Fic, you don't know what you're talking about. She was always level-headed when I watched.

  78. BZ says:

I doubt it was about a woman of color. More about what the audience wants to watch.
I thought she was fine but I remember the show that turned me off and I never watched her again.
I figured it was just me though. Sorry to see anyone lose their job though.

  79. Judy Pendergrass Berger says:

    I agree.

  80. Mary Herrmann Emhoff says:

that's why they are making changes. People are disengaged from the news. You can support them by watching some of them each day. Rachel has had inspiring and motivating reportiing. Start with her.

  81. Mary Herrmann Emhoff says:

    not at all

  82. Mary Herrmann Emhoff says:

Their audience loves the lies, and are engaged by the hate.

  83. Mary Herrmann Emhoff says:

Alex will remain as a political analyst

  84. Mary Herrmann Emhoff says:

  85. Karen Karban says:

Joe and Mika should have been let go first

  86. JMRfromWI says:

They also cancelled Katie Phang, Ayman Mohyeldin, and José Díaz-Balart. All people of color, but not all women.

  87. lefty_lib1 says:

You're rather rabid with all your negative comments. Ridiculous and why I asked someone else to please just leave. Toxic contributions like yours bring everyone down. The current president and his ruler, Elon, are making a mockery of democracy and sucking up to authoritarian rulers. A complete chit show for all to see. Good luck when one of their cuts affects you. BTW, please learn the differences between there, their, and they're. Please learn proper punctuation too. Go to your president's sites and rejoice with all the cult members. You guys got played and you can't even see it. Feel sorry for you.

  88. lefty_lib1 says:

    Two, to, too. Please!!

  89. Patricia Webb says:

It was the only one of two shows on MSNB that I watch. The other is Lawrence O'Donnell. Sad to see her go.

  90. san says:

Mehdi Hasan left MSNBC on principle. Started ZETEO.

  91. dewdrop38 says:

Firing Joy has only made their situation worse. She was one of the few i actually enjoyed watching.

Are you a Russian bot? You sound like one.

  93. suji724 says:

    BRAVO and well done!

  94. suji724 says:

If you're referring to the "Reid Out", you lack intelligence.

  95. suji724 says:

Everybody I know loved Joy Reid! None of the Republican duffuses ilk who have made it possible for dirty diapered dung face Donette who is destroying our democracy!

  96. suji724 says:

    No, not Jobathan Capehart!!

  97. they're ... not their. i love fixing misspellings

  98. well you will not change anything .

  99. lies?? what do you call trump then?? soothsayer? idiot

  100. too busy watching real news ?/ with hannity and shit patrol?

  101. Marilou Vetter says:

I think viewership dropped after 2020 because the audience felt democracy and the country in safer hands when Joe Biden was President. We felt less need to pay attention to everything going on in government. When Trump got reelected, many of us didn't want the stress of watching the news as the new administration went about selecting unqualified cabinet members and department heads, started his agenda of demolishing democratic ideals and the constitutional order...but we are starting to pay attention now as the constitution and its checks and balances disappear and as Trump dismantles as much as possible opposition news sources. In this environment MSNBC will become more important than ever. I'm betting those ratings will start rising again soon.

  102. Justin Napolitano says:

You just lost me as a viewer. MSNBC is now history. CNN will be the only news I will watch.

  103. Theresa O'Neil Kessler says:

she's replying to Jane, under her comments.

  104. Theresa O'Neil Kessler says:

In order of who I enjoy the most......Rachel, Lawrence, Ari, Chris, Stephanie.

  105. lk66 says:

Based on what? People watching live and contacted by a polling company?

  106. lk66 says:

    J. Capehart and Ayman moved to the morning slot on the weekends, while those hosts moved
to Joy's time, so they are not totally gone and can be recorded. Katie is remaining as a legal expert, so she'll probably show up on Ari Belber's show. I think Jose is moving to a different network.

  107. Judy Warren says:

    Please don't give up.

  108. Theresa O'Neil Kessler says:

I agree!!! I have msnbc on approx 10-12 hours a day, no exaggeration....wknds are less though. I'm on the MSNBC Insights. I do survey's for them approx once a wk although since the last couple of months they are few and far between now....wierd..........although maybe the new president of msnbc doesnt want them done as often....who knows! LOLLL

  109. Bruce Budy says:

Excellent comment! I would just say that I do not feel sorry them. They had a good look and supported him still. No sympathy.

  110. Bruce Budy says:

Plenty of fun to be had! Perhaps the only fun in today's commentary....

  111. Bruce Budy says:

Atta girl! Teach 'em to fire your faves due to falling ratings, by not watching anymore. So their ratings fall further?

  112. Bruce Budy says:

    MSNBC Insights?

  113. Bruce Budy says:

Yes! Why not post evidence of one of Rachel's "lies". One or two of the eight would be telling....

  114. Bruce Budy says:

You must of course tell us who you watch for "loon free" programming

  115. Bruce Budy says:

Why not post an MSNBC "Lie". just as an example for those who haven't spotted one on their own?

  116. Sandra Hunter says:

As people realize what a mistake it was ŕo reelect Trump , MSNBC's viewership will return. People will seek the truth. I have always found MSNBC To report the truth as they know it. Fox does not report the truth!

  117. Heloise Pendergast says:

Joy was just that--a joy--with nothing but raw truth, and she pulled no punches. Her show had more value than 10 other vanilla (literally) mainstream shows put together. I will follow her to and support her through whatever project she creates next. KUDOS JOY! Well done girl, take a deep bow. The way this ended by NO MEANS defines you.

  118. Wide Open Country says:

Do you think MSNBC made a mistake by canceling Joy Reid's show?

  119. FlCracker2 says:

Level headed for the nuthouse perhaps.

  120. FlCracker2 says:

Half a bubble off is not level.
