Zulma Guzman Castro, 54, was arrested in England. She was charged with allegedly fatally poisoning a pair of teenage girls with raspberries containing thallium. The manner in which she was captured could have come straight from a Hollywood whodunit with a twisty plot.
What Led to the Arrest
According to dailymail.co.uk, the two girls, Emilia Forero, 13, and Ines de Bedout, 14, died last year after consuming chocolate raspberries laced with thallium. Castro has reportedly been eluding authorities since she left Colombia in 2024. She "was dramatically found in the UK after being rescued from the River Thames, near Battersea Bridge, west London, on December 16."
She was in a psychiatric unit. Castro was reportedly subsequently brought to a police station and then to court. An extradition hearing was slated for January 6,
Castro was allegedly having a years-long affair with Ines de Bedout's dad, Juan. The relationship supposedly came to a conclusion before Juan de Bedout's wife passed away. Castro is also reportedly being looked at for any link to de Bedout's wife's death in 2021. She died from cancer, but was allegedly poisoned with thallium on two occasions prior to that.
The Bottled Water Castro Was Drinking on TV Offered Key Clues to Her Location
There was a remarkable turn of events. Castro was consuming a British brand of bottled water while she was being interviewed about the case for Colombian television. That small, easily-overlooked detail offered key clues as to Castro's whereabouts.
Per the outlet, an unnamed source said, "The bottle of water she drank from was Buxton Natural Mineral Water, a product mainly commercialised in the UK. The size of the bottle she was drinking are sold in street shops, which would indicate Guzman is in an apartment or house and not in a hotel."
Castro Denies Involvement in the Girls' Deaths
Castro claimed in an interview that she feels she is bring linked to the girls' deaths because of her previous relationship with Juan de Bedout. According to the Daily Mail, she said, "I was Juan de Bedout's lover for so many years, and I think I'm practically very easy to implicate in that."
