According to updates issued by Caffee's family on Instagram, both Elise and her husband, Dan, were one of the vehicles involved in a 10-vehicle pile-up on Thursday, March 6. The collision with the truck caused Caffee's vehicle to flip. As a result, Elise Caffee was trapped, and the truck's hot asphalt spilled all over her and other people "in front of the other cars." Caffee's vehicle driver, Luis, died at the scene.

The accident took place right in front of a hospital. Medical staff and Dan, who only sustained minor injuries, rushed to help Caffee. However, given the asphalt's temperature, first responders also were burned, even through their protective gloves. Caffee's body was badly burned, but her face remained intact. She received immediate treatment at the Cancun hospital. She was later flown to Salt Lake City, where she underwent surgery.
