During an inquest hearing on Monday, March 17, 2025, as reported by The Guardian, Louise Sutherland, Nunn's mother, provided some details about Nunn's life. Born "profoundly deaf," Nunn struggled with mental health issues since she was 14. This led her to attempt to take her own life multiple times throughout the years. Imogen Nunn was eventually detained in 2018, under the Mental Health Act.

She remained an inpatient at a hospital's ward for deaf adults for nearly four years. Nunn was discharged on September 15, 2021. She then started living by herself in a Brighton apartment. However, months later, by July 2022, Nunn started experiencing mental health deterioration once again. She stopped meeting with mental health professionals.

On November 14, 2022, Imogen Nunn reportedly purchased the poisonous substance she would later take. While Nunn's father, Ray, contacted her allocated worker due to her daughter's suicidal thoughts, no sign language interpreter was present at the wellness check performed by the police. On December 29, 2022, Nunn harmed herself in her arm and was transported to Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Failed

As per the inquest, Imogen Nunn texter her care coordinator. "I'm simply having the worst few months and I think I need to be admitted to a ward with sign language. I cannot look after myself any more. I can easily go into the last resort and I don't want to," she wrote. Despite this, she was left alone at the ER and left the hospital. A mental health team never evaluated her.

A day later, on December 30, 2022, Nunn told her psychologist that she had "a plan to kill herself." It was agreed at the time that she would be admitted into a mental health crisis facility. However, when the day arrived, the care coordinator failed to meet her and she was never admitted into the facility.

On New Year's Day 2023, Imogen Nunn took her own life after she consumed the poisonous substance she previously bought online. She was 25 years old.

Louise Sutherland believes that, if her daughter had been correctly supported by mental health professionals, her death could have been prevented.

"We believe Immy's death was avoidable, and had appropriate actions been taken in response to the numerous times Immy contacted professionals she trusted asking for help, she would still be alive today," Sutherland said.

Similarly, Thomas Beamon, who represents both Louise and Ray, Nunn's parents, said that Imogen felt "hopeless and let down" and "was failed" at the time of her death. "Immy didn't want to die, but she was exhausted from fighting desperately for the help she needed," Beamon added.

Imogen Nunn gained popularity online as she amassed "over 800,000 followers" on TikTok. She shared her struggles with mental health as well as the challenges of living as a deaf person.
