Pope Francis's Friend Says He Will Not Resign Amid Health Woes

Pope Francis has commonly suffered from lung infections due to pluracy as a younger man, but this year has taken a heavier toll on his health. However, despite his prolonged hospitalization, his friends say he doesn't intend to resign from his role as pope.

At present, the pope has been in hospital suffering from double pneumonia for several weeks. He has retired from public appearances and has been under strict medical supervision. Recent reports from the Vatican medical teams state that he is currently using an assisted breathing apparatus.

However, despite his ill health, sources close to the pope have stated that he does not intend to resign from his position. The honoured role of head of the catholic church is a lifelong commitment, and he plans to soldier on.

Pope Benedict XVI did resign from his position in 2013, citing a "lack of strength of mind and body." However, Pope Francis has dismissed rumours he will do the same. Elisabetta Pique, his biographer and close friend, sang his praises recently in the Buenos Aires-based La Nacion newspaper. "He's always been a fighter. He doesn't give in under pressure. The more pressure they put on him, the more likely he won't give in."

Prayers Pour In For Pope

The head of the Catholic church has his fair share of admirers. Pope Francis has been an interesting figure in the papal seat. Catholics have flocked from around the world to offer their prayers and well wishes.

The many worshippers coming to pay their respects to the pope will hopefully guide him through his ill health and prevent him from needing to resign from the position. He has been at the head of the church since 2013.

Pope Francis has made some interesting decisions during his time as the pontiff. One of his earlier pronouncements, which was indicative of the rest of his time, was the choice to turn down a salary. Typically, the pope is entitled to a reported $32,000 a month. However, Francis chose to turn the offer down, insisting that the honour of being pope was enough.

As time goes on and his situation develops, the world will wait with bated breath to see him reappear. However, there seems to be little chance that the pope will bow out and resign.
