At 88 years old, Pope Francis has been more active than most as the most prestigious religious figure anyone could aspire to. But now, he's suffering from pneumonia in both lungs after an infection developed. Despite the doctor's best efforts, they have been unable to fight the bacteria off.
Last week, Pope Francis was admitted to hospital with bronchitis. The Pontiff was attended by his holy doctors and treated for the bacterial infection. But, after new scans were done on His Holiness, it appeared that bacterial pneumonia had developed in both of Pope Francis' lungs.
The Vatican released a statement about the current health situation of the Pope. "Laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture." However, they reassure his thousands of fans around the world that "Nevertheless, Pope Francis remains in good spirits."
Pope Francis Is In The Best Holy Hands
As well as the best doctors the Holy See can muster, Pope Francis has the prayers of 1.39 billion Catholics willing away his pneumonia. You can't beat those kinds of numbers of prayers. He has addressed his flock, thanking them for their continued devotion to his health.
Since the recent treatments, Pope Francis has returned to some of his duties, despite the pneumonia. He is dedicated to his lifelong position as head of the Catholic state.
His Holiness is particularly susceptible to lung infection. Apart from being 88 years old, he also already had weakened lungs. As a younger man, he suffered from pleurisy. Due to this, he had a part of one of his lungs removed.
Now, he is often attacked by bouts of bronchitis during the winter. However, this time it has developed into something more serious that takes quite a lot more treatment. Despite being on medication and under the watchful eyes of doctors, Pope Francis refuses to let his pneumonia keep him from his duties.
It is unclear how long he will be kept in the hospital.
