According to a news release issued by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, San Diego police officers arrived at the scene located at 600 W. Broadway at around 8:45 p.m. They were answering to a separate unrelated incident when at around 8:51 p.m., shots were fired at an MTS Trolley Platform.

Simultaneously, Konoa Wilson had approached two individuals at the station's outdoor tracks, according to PEOPLE. One of these individuals then reportedly drew a gun, which prompted Wilson to run from the area. Shots were fired but none of them hit Wilson.

As officers were heading in the direction of the shots, Wilson exited the station toward an intersection. Bodycam footage released on February 21 shows Wilson exiting the station and Officer Gold firing his weapon. Footage reveals that Gold did not announce he was a San Diego police officer until he fired his gun.

Konoa Wilson was transported to a local hospital. A handgun was recovered from him, according to the sheriff's office news release. Wilson, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The whole incident is currently under investigation and Officer Gold is on administrative leave.

Family Vigil

Following the release of the body footage, a candlelight vigil was held by Konoa's family on Friday, February 21. There, his father, Steven Wilson, talked with FOX 5 and addressed the loss of his son and the incident as a whole. In particular, he tried to think about his favorite memories with his son.

"There's too many to list," Steven said. "We were together every day of his life." He also remembered the moment he found out about his son's incident. "Oh, it was the worst possible reaction you could have," Steven added. "Just stomach dropping, this can't be real. It must be a joke."

Other family members also regretted his untimely death.

"He'll never be able to get married or finish high school or go to college or had kids, and it's senseless. He was a good boy," Lila Silva, Konoa's cousin, told the outlet. Silva would then add, about Officer Gold, "When we think of officers, we think protect and serve, not shoot and kill." "Anybody could be turning that corner," Silva continued. "Anyone of us, and you would be shot dead, all because you were turning that corner."

Police Statement

The SPDP Chief of Police Scott Wahl shared a statement with multiple outlets, including PEOPLE and FOX 5. He addressed the incident and the release of the bodycam footage.

"We recognize incidents like this have a deep impact and can create emotion and concern among family members, the officer involved, the department and our community as a whole," the statement reads. "While it's never easy to watch this kind of footage, our department remains committed to transparency and ensuring a fair, thorough, independent investigation."

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by Steven Wilson. His father described Konoa as "a loving, peaceful human who never caused problems for others."

The unnamed initial shooter, a 16-year-old boy, was arrested on February 6, 2025.
