Sao Paulo, Brazil is known for being a dangerous region of the country, with high crime, and a police force that stays reactionary. However, the footage of the police officer throwing the young delivery driver from the bridge in Brazil seems to be completely uncalled for.
According to reports, police had been chasing several delivery drivers through the city for having no plates. As they reached the Vila Clara neighborhood, they caught up with the drivers. But, a nearby funk party reacted by pelting the police with bottles and rocks.
The mob was dispersed with pepper spray, and one person was shot. However, while this was going on footage was being taken of the delivery driver. He was trying to deal with his bike and police on the bridge. In the footage, Marcelo do Amaral, 25, approaches the police, asking how long the delays will be to the delivery. However, as he speaks to them, Luan Pereira, 29, a police officer with a track record of violence, grabs him by the shirt and throws him from the bridge.
Thankfully, he landed in a stream below and was able to climb back up to the road. Here, friends took him to a nearby hospital. According to his father "He's fine, but we haven't been able to talk to him. It's unacceptable."
Police Officer Who Threw Man From Bridge Has A Violent Past
The policeman responsible for throwing the delivery driver from the bridge in Brazil had previously been involved in a shooting earlier in his career. After a high-speed chase through the city of Sao Paulo, a motorcycle rider ran from the police.
Luan Pereira then opened fire on Maycon Valério, 31 in the town of Diadema. He shot him a total of 12 times as he ran, killing him. The man was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his wounds. Authorities found Pereira innocent, claiming he somehow acted in self-defense.
However, this time around São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas had something to say on the matter. "The São Paulo Military Police is an institution that offers, above all, its professionalism when it comes to protecting people. Police are on the street to confront crime and make people feel safe. Those who go so far as to throw someone off a bridge, are clearly not fit to wear this uniform," he said on X.
