Police in Virginia have arrested a suspect in connection with the disappearance of a mother and child over seven years after they went missing.

Per a report by People, Kier Johnson, 34, and her newborn daughter, Chloe Johnson, went missing from Hampton, Virginia, back in April 2017. Authorities uncovered very little about the disappearance at the time, but a lengthy investigation has finally led to an arrest.
According to a
press release from the Newport News Police Department, Carlos Johnson, 46, from Newport News, was arrested on February 14. Officers took Carlos into custody around 12:30 pm, charged with two counts of first-degree murder. While Carlos shares a surname with Kier, WTKR notes that the pair weren't married. The matching name is just a coincidence.Newport News Police Department explains that back in May 2017, police discovered Carlos' abandoned vehicle in Newport News. Since then, the department focused 'significant resources' on locating Kier and Chloe.
Per the press release, Chief of Police Steve Drew said, "We understand the deep emotional impact this situation has had on the family, our community, and our Department. It has always been our sincerest hope that Keir and Chloe would be found alive. However, as the investigation progressed, we had to confront the painful reality that this was not the case."
The Police Say 'This Day Has Been A Long Time Coming'
The Newport News Police Department reportedly spent tens of thousands of hours unraveling the two victim's disappearance. The press release also explains they are offering a reward for information leading to the recovery of Kier and Chloe.
The press release concludes "This day has been a long time coming, especially for the family of Keir and Chloe. We want to express our deepest empathy for the Johnson family during this incredibly difficult time. While we recognize that this arrest cannot bring Keir and Chloe back, we sincerely hope it provides a sense of justice for their loved ones."
Per the report by People, Kier and Chloe are still listed as 'missing' on the Virginia State Police roster. The bodies of the victims have never been found.
