Following a rash of deaths along the Lansing River Trail in Lansing, Michigan, police are investigating the possibility that a serial killer is loose in the area.

Police Chief Robert Backus revealed that five men have recently been killed in Michigan's capital city during a press conference.

"One question that we are being asked is 'Do we have a serial killer in Lansing?'" Backus said at the press conference on Oct. 2. "What we need the public to know is that we are investigating all of these cases. They are all active investigations, and we are looking at the idea or the possibility that these may be related cases."

Michigan Police Investigating String of Deaths

Backus added, "We look for information. We look for trends. We look for patterns. And we have developed some."

Backus noted that all five murder victims were homeless and believes they may have been attacked in their sleep.

"We believe that our victims in this case were lying down, potentially even sleeping. We don't know that. But based on how we found our victims and their surroundings, it would lead us to believe that this could be a pattern," he said.

The first death happened on Oct. 14, 2025. Lansing police were called about an injured subject and found the victim, 54-year-old Gino Chouinard, with injuries to his face. He was brought to a local hospital and was pronounced dead on Oct. 27.

Backus said the cause of Chouinard's death was undetermined, citing the local medical examiner's office. The LPD continues to investigate, and there is no new suspect information in that case, he said.

The second incident happened on July 9 — 268 days after the first death. Police working on the trail found 70-year-old Denis Dunnebacke, unresponsive, covered in vomit, and with injuries to his face. He was transferred to the hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead on July 16.

Three more homeless people were found brutalized near the trail between July and late August, with medical examiners confirming their deaths as homicides.

Backus shared that all victims were white males ranging from 22 to 70 years old.

"Our goal, our mandate, is that someone will be brought to justice" in all cases, Backus said.

  1. Why did Alex Jones order this man's death? Was he about to reveal infowars own dark secrets? Or did they just need a ratings bump, and he was most expendable?
