The parents of an Auburn University student who has gone missing in Japan have joined the search to find their son. According to the New York Post, this comes after 20-year-old James "Weston" Higginbotham disappeared on May 29.
He had apparently travelled to the eastern Yamashina Ward in Kyoto. According to his parents, he may have visited there for the hiking trails. His phone location went off after he came off a train in the area.
Higginbotham has been described as an "excellent navigator" and an experienced hiker, so his disappearance has left authorities scratching their heads. He was last seen wearing a white shirt with a "Save the Bees" graphic, alongside lavender corduroy pants and Adidas sneakers.
His parents have urged people to "not post his exact location publicly" if he is found. Nancy Higginbotham, his mother, added that "He may be emotionally distressed, so this is urgent."
In a heartbreaking plea, she also asked people to "please be kind" about the situation. "We are living in our own hell. He is not detained from a night out partying. The police have confirmed this. Please, I beg you, be kind. I'm already in so much pain."

Authorities From Both Countries Have Stepped In to Help
Alabama state representatives Mike Shaw (R-47th District) as well as Susan DuBose (R-45th District) have stepped in to do their part.
They have contacted the honorary consul general of Japan, Mark B. Jackson, as well as the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta. Shaw added that "We understand that the appropriate resources are engaged and searching for Weston. Let's all pray for Weston's safe return, for strength and peace for his family, for wisdom and endurance for everyone involved in the search."
Since he has gone missing, other authorities have tried to help. The Japan Legislative Exchange in the Alabama House of Representatives said that "Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Its people are some of the friendliest and most helpful you'll ever meet. They are masters at collaboration in times of crisis."
This is a truly tragic situation. We hope that he is found safe and sound soon.
