Diagnoses of gambling disorder rose more than 60% since 2018 in states that have legalized sports betting, according to a new study of electronic health records across the US.
The rate of gambling disorder in states with legalized sports betting rose from 3.0 per 100,000 to 4.8 per 100,000, according to Epic Research, a private firm known in the medical field for its research on public health trends.
Unhealthy gambling habits have apparently trickled down to youth football, too.
Parents Trigger Massive Brawl at Youth Football Game
Over the weekend, parents engaged in a massive brawl at a youth football game in Winter Haven, Florida. Deputies believe the physical altercation stemmed from parents betting on the game's outcome.
Fox 13 reported that the fight broke out when a parent struck the Plant City coach in the head, which escalated into a widespread brawl.
Authorities stated that no arrests have been made.
Although no arrests were made, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd sent a strong warning about such behavior.
"If you're at these youth sporting events, and you're gambling on these teams, we're going to go undercover and look for that conduct. We'll arrest you quickly. That's totally inappropriate on every level," Judd said.
The incident is still under investigation. Once identified, suspects will face misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct or affray.
Deputies could also pursue additional charges if they uncover evidence of illegal betting.
Finance expert and award-winning author Dave Ramsey recently said that sports betting is ruining Gen Z and called FanDuel a "portal to hell."
"The fastest growing addiction that is destroying young men in their 20s in America, faster than anything I've ever seen in 30 years of doing this, is online sports gambling," Ramsey said, per Yahoo Finance. "FanDuel is a portal to hell. DraftKings ain't king of nothing except their own pocketbook."
