Over 1.5 Million Pounds of Deli Meat, Including Hot Dogs and Bacon, Are Under Recall

A recall of more than 1.5 million pounds of hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and other deli meats was announced over the weekend.

A recall of more than 1.5 million pounds of hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and other deli meats has been announced because the products may have gotten too warm in storage, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

What Products Are Affected by the Recall?

According to U.S. News and World Report, FSIS announced the recall on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kayem Foods Inc., located in Chelsea, Massachusetts, made the ready-to-eat products between March 31 and Oct. 7.

The agency placed the recall in its Class I category, its highest-risk group. The affected products were shipped to stores and other service locations across the United States and Hong Kong.

The food was sold under eight different brand names: Kayem, Al Fresco, Triple M, McKenzie, Deutschmacher, Jordan's, Essem, and Winnisimmet St. Butchery.

The products include hot dogs, bacon, deli ham and turkey breast, bologna, liverwurst, corned beef, brisket, and kielbasa. The recall also includes chicken sausages, meatballs, and breakfast patties under the Al Fresco label.

The affected products carry the following establishment numbers on the label: EST. M/P 7839, EST. P 20935A, or EST. M 9520. Some of the use-by dates are as late as Feb. 2027. This means some of the affected products could still be in homes.

What Should I Do If I Have the Product?

A customer complained on Oct. 1 that the affected products felt warm at delivery. When Kayem investigated, it discovered that a warehouse cooler was not keeping a steady cold temperature.

When perishable food spends too much time at warm temperatures, germs that can cause foodborne illness can grow, making the products unsafe to eat.

No confirmed reports indicate anyone has become sick from consuming the affected products. If you have the affected product, FSIS urges customers to throw it away or return it to the store where they purchased it.

If you have questions, call Kayem customer service at 800-426-6100, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. You can also email the company at [email protected].
