Outrage Ensues After Student Is Suspended From School Over “Crazy” Rule

The student explained that they hadn't even been told about the rule by the school before promptly being suspended because of it.

Imagine your daily routine. If you're anything like me, it's fuelled by caffeine. Whether that's a coffee, or an energy drink - a little kick to start the day does wonders, right?

Well, one student was punished for this - and the Internet has gone wild over it. Beaver River Central School, in New York, has a pretty unusual rule, per Dexerto.

Students aren't allowed to buy outside food and drinks to bring into class. Well, honors student Julie Kaputa didn't get the memo - literally. They never told her this rule.

The school had brought the new rule into effect over the summer. The superintendent, Todd Green, explained it was "intended to promote a safe and distraction-free learning environment."

Here's the play by play of what Kaputa said happened. She said that she brought coffee into school, and her first-period teacher said she needed to either pour it out or drink it. She said she was later suspended for an indeterminate amount of time.

Green went on to explain that the school rule itself wasn't even properly announced - and Kaputa had been suspended based on a rule that wasn't even concretely set in stone for the students.

"It's good to see students standing up for what they believe him," he explained to local outlet WWNY. "If things get pointed out that we need to do and change or fix, we'll do that."

The Internet Went Wild Over the School Rule

But, of course, when the Internet hears about a tale of injustice such of this, they go wild.

Commenters were quick to point out that the whole thing was extra unfair if the students weren't told.

One wrote, "suspending someone for breaking a rule you forgot to tell them about is unbelievably stupid," with another writing, "School admits they didn't tell anyone about the ban but still punished the kid for it, that is not discipline that is just lazy administration".

Other commenters were quick to say that the rule itself was insane. One noted, "You can't have coffee at 18 in school is f****** crazy," with another writing, "Ban the dumb a** who thought of that [rule].. because teachers will most certainly bring in outside food and drinks and it's not fair for the students."
