'Our Song': Taylor Swift's First No. 1 Was Written for Her High School Talent Show

Taylor Swift has become a household name around the world, but it all started with her first No. 1 hit, "Our Song." The single stayed in the No. 1 spot for six weeks and earned 4x-Platinum status by the RIAA. The song also made the Top 20 on Billboard's Hot 100. The teen songwriter even won female video of the year at the 2008 CMT Music Awards in Nashville, Tennessee.

Swift's self-titled debut album, released under Big Machine Records, was a life-changer. Tracks from the record like "Tim McGraw," "Picture To Burn," "Teardrops On My Guitar," and "Should've Said No" were all huge hits for the 16-year-old. Her career as a country music star took off in flight and has been soaring ever since.

The Story Behind 'Our Song'

Swift wrote the song for her high school talent show, but backstage at the CMT Awards, Swift told Craig Shelburne, "I never thought it was going to be on an album. I never thought I'd get to record it. I never thought it would be a single, I never thought it would go No. 1, and I never thought it would win Video of the Year. I am absolutely taken aback and so, so incredibly, unbelievably, unbelievably grateful."

Swift also recalled the of making the 'Our Song' music video.

"I remember all the outfits, and I remember how Trey (Swift's video director) had this video in her head," Swift said. "When she heard the song, she had this idea for a front porch performance and then a field of flowers for another performance, then a black-and-white performance shot. It all came together in her head. She was able to translate that so well onto film. It just shows what a truly great director she is."

'Our Song'  Taylor Swift Lyrics:

I was riding shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
He's got a one-hand feel on the steering wheel
The other on my heart
I look around, turn the radio down
He says, "Baby, is something wrong?"
I say, "Nothing, I was just thinking how we don't have a song"
And he says

Our song is the slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date; "Man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said "Amen"
Asking God if he could play it again

I was walkin' up the front porch steps after everything that day
Had gone all wrong and been trampled on
And lost and thrown away
Got to the hallway, well on my way
To my lovin' bed
I almost didn't notice all the roses
And the note that said

Our song is the slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date; "Man, I didn't kiss her and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said "Amen"
Asking God if he could play it again

I've heard every album, listened to the radio
Waited for something to come along
That was as good as our song

'Cause our song is the slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on his window
When we're on the phone and he talks real slow
'Cause it's late and his mama don't know
Our song is the way he laughs
The first date; "Man, I didn't kiss him, and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said "Amen"
Askin' God if he could play it again
Play it again
Oh yeah
Oh, oh yeah

I was ridin' shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
I grabbed a pen and an old napkin
And I wrote down our song
