It looks like British boyband One Direction member Liam Payne might be the latest artist to try his hand at country music.
In a new interview, Payne says he's trying his hand at writing country-oriented songs in preparation of the band's upcoming hiatus from the music scene.
"I have written country songs," Payne said. "That's where my mind is set. A lot of people say to me, 'Oh, you'll go solo', but I haven't thought about that. If the right song comes along and I think I should sing it, then I will release it as a solo artist."
The chart-topping band will break up temporarily beginning in March, which leaves Payne with plenty of time to work on his own solo music. Although it's unclear if these songs will ever make it to the recording studio, it's an interesting development that shows the relevance of country music across all genres.
If Payne does take a real stab at going country, he'll follow in the footsteps of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, the Eagles' Don Henley and Korn's Jonathan Davis. Payne's young and fresh perspective might be a welcome breath of fresh air from the current country climate, but we'll all just have to wait and see if he follows through.
