A 38-year-old New York City man, Ryan Cato, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the brutal murder of 10-year-old Ayden Wolfe. Cato tortured Ayden, his girlfriend's son, to death after undergoing constant abuse by him.

According to the New York Post, the incident that sparked the investigation took place on March 6, 2021. Two months after moving into his girlfriend Aquisha Johnson's home in Harlem in January 2021, first responders arrived at the apartment and found Ayden naked without a pulse. The 10-year-old was rushed to a local hospital, but after failed attempts to save his life, Ayden Wolfe succumbed to his injuries.
It was at the hospital that doctors were horrified to discover the abuse that Ayden had been suffering. Not only did his body show bruises, but he had broken ribs and internal injuries. These included lacerations in his liver, kidneys, and renal vein. Medical examiners determined that Ayden's cause of death was battered child syndrome.
As per the then-New York City Police Department Chief Rodney Harrison, some of Ayden's injuries were old, with others being recent.
Gruesome Details
Prosecutors revealed and detailed the abuse that Ayden suffered at the hands of Cato. He forced the 10-year-old Ayden to hold weights over his head while repeatedly punching him, as per the prosecutors. He allegedly even filmed the abuse and sent the videos to his friends.
"Isolated from teachers and other responsible adults because of the pandemic, 10-year-old Ayden Wolfe was enduring horrific violence at the hands of his mother's boyfriend," Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement.
It was on March 5, 2021, that bangs and thuds were heard inside the apartment. Johnson told Cato to stop abusing Ayden, but officials claim Cato threatened Johnson instead. A day later, Johnson called 911 and reported on her boyfriend, who then took the phone away from her.
Before Cato's trial, Aquisha Johnson pleaded guilty to manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide as per The New York Times. She even testified against Cato, but was not allowed to read a victim impact statement. As per the Post, Johnson can withdraw her plea to manslaughter thanks to an existing cooperation agreement.
Ryan Cato was convicted of second-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
