Large parts of the world have dealt with hotter-than-usual summers. We've all seen the news of wildfires in Europe and multiple countries struggling under the additional pressure of intense heat. When the temperature spikes the way it has, it's usually followed by significant downpours.
Unfortunately for New York City, it's one of the first places to be hit by torrential rain as its heatwave comes to an end. In fact, the city was subjected to such a downpour throughout Thursday, August 20. That downpour led to flooding in multiple parts of the city, with some areas already 'under water.'

To make matters worse, the video shows a downpour that shows no signs of ending. Therefore, the flooding is only going to get worse as time goes on.
A Tornado Warning Has Also Been Issued for Queens, NYC
For some parts of NYC, flooding is only the start of their problems. According to NY1, a tornado warning had been issued for southeast Queens. There have also been videos of a waterspout in Jamaica Bay. The National Weather Service will survey the area later on Friday to confirm whether the waterspout was part of a tornado.
Due to the heavy rain and flooding, John F. Kennedy International Airport recorded 167 flight cancellations on Thursday, per NY1.
"Severe thunderstorms caused flooding, damage, and travel disruptions across the five boroughs Thursday night," NY1 reported. "...Central Park recorded 2.31 inches, LaGuardia saw 2.25 inches, parts of the Bronx reported up to 2.03 inches, and parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn received nearly 2 inches."
New York residents will now hope that the worst of the rain has passed. After all, repair efforts can only begin once the worst of the weather has moved on, and the chance of a repeat occurrence is slim.
