42-year-old Hassan Kariem was fatally injured after falling from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell, just outside of Atlanta, on Oct. 12. He was reportedly thrown from the ride around 4 pm, injuring 4 other parkgoers in the process.
Kariem was pronounced dead at the scene.
Now, new details surrounding the horrific incident have emerged, with Kariem's brother-in-law, Joshua Nelson, revealing that his daughter (and Kariem's niece) called him in a panic shortly after the harrowing ordeal. She was reportedly next to Kariem on the ride.
"What she told me on that phone call... She said he fainted, or he passed out," Nelson told Atlanta outlet WSBTV on Oct. 15. "They went up and down, up and down, up and down. It went up again, his latch snapped or came loose, and he fell."
"She told me he fell off the rollercoaster," Nelson continued.
Nelson added that his daughter said she wasn't sure where her uncle was after he was thrown from the rollercoaster.
Hassan Kariem's Niece Was at Six Flags Celebrating Her 13th Birthday Before He Fell From Rollercoaster
Kariem's niece was at Six Flags Over Georgia celebrating her 13th birthday. Nelson told WSBTV she was okay following the tragedy.
Nelson said he next called Kariem's wife, Eboni. She was reportedly waiting just outside the entrance to the ride. Moments later, authorities announced someone had died, and she grew concerned that it was her husband.
The Cobb County Police later added details surrounding the Wesley International Academy technology teacher's death.
"Preliminary information gathered through witness and employee interviews indicates Kariem was ejected from the ride. [He] struck other patrons before falling beneath the attraction," the department explained in a statement, per The New York Post.
Reportedly, the 4 other parkgoers injured were juveniles and only suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, a Six Flags employee who was first on the scene after Kariem's fall opened up about finding the fatally injured parkgoer. He admitted that the incident was "genuinely horrifying."
"I have not suffered any physical injuries, but it has been on my mind very recently through these past days," park supervisor KeJuan Taylor told CNN.
An investigation into the incident conducted by Cobb County Police Department's Major Crimes Unit and Georgia's Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire remains ongoing.
