Nick Reiner has been indicted by a grand jury for the grisly December 14, 2025, murders of his parents. They were actor/director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, photographer Michele Reiner, 70. Per CNN, a Los Angeles Country grand jury "returned the indictment on July 20, and it was unsealed Wednesday, [August 12] when Nick Reiner entered a not guilty plea." However, there is a grim new aspect that has been added. Reiner allegedly was lying in wait for his father and mother on the night they were slain.

There will be a pretrial hearing that is slated for Tuesday, September 15. That is the day after Nick Reiner's 33rd birthday.
The alleged crime took place at the Reiners' home. It is in the tony Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The murders rocked Hollywood, the entertainment industry, and the public as well. Even months later, the horrifying nature of the alleged crime and the loss of two beloved figures is deeply jarring.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney Released a Statement
In a news release on his web site dated August 12, 2026, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman observed this. "This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing. The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait. We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice."
Furthermore, the release explains the following. "Nick Reiner (dob 9/14/93) pleaded not guilty today to two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait after the indictment was unsealed. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife."
What Penalty Might Nick Reiner Face?
Regarding the consequences that Nick Reiner may eventually face, the release mentioned two options. One is the death penalty. The other is life in state prison without possibility of parole. A decision about seeking the death penalty has reportedly not been made at this time.
