Claude was an NHL legend, having won four Stanley Cups throughout his illustrious career. He spent 21 years in the NHL, representing the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, and San Jose Sharks. His Stanley Cup wins came in 1986, 1995, 1996, and 2000.
The legendary hockey player was also named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 1995.
Claude originally entered the NHL in 1983. He was the 26th pick in that year's draft, meaning he went in the second round. Of course, his career success ensured that his draft position was rarely spoken about throughout his tenure in the league.
Fans React to the Final Appearance of Claude Lemieux
Shortly after people began to realize that Claude had recently been seen in public, fans began to share tributes.
"RIP to a true hockey warrior and legend," one social media user wrote on X. "Claude Lemieux didn't just play the game, he battled it with unmatched fire and heart. Four Stanley Cups, clutch playoff heroics that defined eras and that unbreakable competitive spirit that made him one of the most respected and feared guys to ever lace 'em up."
Another user pointed out how Claude was a player you hated your team to face, but always respected.
"The type of player you hated for 60 minutes and respected for 20 years," the user wrote on X.
The NHL Released a Statement Following the Death of Claude Lemieux
Upon learning of Claude's death, the NHL released a statement.
"The NHL Alumni Association is devastated to share that Claude Lemieux has passed away at the age of 60," the statement reads. "...Internationally, Claude represented Canada on several occasions, including capturing a gold medal at the 1985 World Junior Hockey Championships and winning the 1987 Canada Cup. He was loved by his wife and four children, and on behalf of the Lemieux family, we kindly ask that everyone respect their privacy during this difficult time."
There are currently no details regarding Claude's impending funeral. Those details will undoubtedly remain private for family and close friends.
