When the remains of 65-year-old Edwin Echevarria's torso were found floating down the river near Governor's Island, his 23-year-old housemate was arrested. He has been accused of killing his roommate over a food dispute.
The report states that Christian Millet admitted to killing his roommate. According to sources, he confessed to knocking the 65-year-old to the ground, stamping on his head, and then stabbing him 14 times with an ice pick. He allegedly did this inside their shared apartment on the Lower East Side.
After killing his roommate, he allegedly then dragged the body to their bathtub. Here, he began the arduous task of cutting up the body with a kitchen knife.
Food Theft Is A Crime Punishable By Death
According to the report, once Christian Millet had finished killing and butchering his roommate, he then put it in a suitcase. He threw this into the river. It was spotted by a passing vessel, and recovered by investigators.
They opened it up to discover the gory contents, sparking an investigation. Police immediately went to the dead man's shared home. Here, they found Millet. He confessed to the murder as soon as they took him down to the police station.
It is believed that he killed his roommate over a food dispute. The two had somewhat of a relationship before they became roommates according to the nephew of the murdered man. "He was the son of my uncle's on-again, off-again girlfriend," Eric Maldonado said. "My uncle felt sorry for him. He said he saw the kid grow up and that he had problems with his mother and she threw him out."
This explains why the 65-year-old man was living with the younger man. However, despite his kind actions, his young roommate still ended up killing him. According to the dead man's nephew, other members of his family had warned him against Millet. "My brother tried to get him out. But my uncle said he felt bad for the kid and he kept defending him."
Sadly, his kindness seemed to have been his downfall.
