It's a rare and potentially deadly disorder. Basically, what happens is the immune system stops working. White blood cells turn against the body itself, attacking the liver and spleen and other areas. It causes organ damage. Without treatment, it can lead to death.

The rare disorder is caused by either infection or can occur due to genetic factors.

The family shared in a GoFundMe post that the teen had passed away. He "courageously battled this devastating illness, spending weeks in and out of the hospital."

"Despite every effort, Waseh sadly passed away, leaving behind a heartbroken family who loved him deeply," they also wrote.

Someone created the GoFundMe to help the teen's mother, Soraya Shah, with a host of medical and burial costs. The fundraiser garnered more than $37,000.

"Soraya is now facing every parent's worst nightmare while also trying to care for Waseh's siblings, Abe and Haleena, during this incredibly painful time," the post said. "No mother should have to endure this kind of loss, especially while carrying the emotional and financial burden on her own."

"Soraya and her family are deeply grateful for all of the love, prayers, generosity, and support shown during this incredibly difficult time. Your kindness has meant so much to them and has brought comfort as they mourn this heartbreaking loss," the post also said. "Today, Waseh was laid to rest, and the family is so appreciative of everyone who has kept them in their thoughts and prayers."

Prior to developing the rare disorder, the teen attended Paramus High School and played for the football team. Following his passing, the school paid tribute to his life.

"Paramus Football mourns the loss of our brother, Waseh Sultani," the tribute read. "He was a great teammate, a hard worker, and someone who brought energy to our program every day."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. We will honor Waseh by sticking together and supporting one another the way he always did," the team added. "Rest easy, Waseh."
