During the August 15 broadcast of the Grand Ole Opry, Darius Rucker and Luke Bryan paid tribute to a shared country music influence with a cover of Brooks & Dunn's 1992 hit "Neon Moon."
The heartbreak song, penned by Ronnie Dunn and made famous as a duet with musical partner Kix Brooks, is one of several '90s hits that left a clear mark on not just Rucker and Bryan but also peers ranging from Blake Shelton and Luke Combs to Morgan Wallen and Carly Pearce.
"Our voices feel so good, let's pretend like we're Ronnie Dunn for a second," Rucker said while introducing the song. Bryan countered with a swift punchline: "They don't feel that good."
The Brooks & Dunn classic comes one hour and 26 minutes into the above video. In addition, Rucker's set includes his version of Opry regulars The Old Crow Medicine Show's "Wagon Wheel," his own double platinum hit in 2009's "Alright" and recent quarantine creation "Beers and Sunshine." Bryan performed "Play It Again" plus two songs off new album Born Here Live Here Die Here: "One Margarita" and the title track. Bryan's new release debuted atop Billboard's Country Albums chart.
Upon its release, Brooks & Dunn's hit "Neon Moon" became the duo's third straight No. 1 on the country charts from debut album Brand New Man.
This Saturday (August 22), Jon Pardi and Runaway June will share the Opry House stage with Brooks & Dunn's fellow '90s legend Pam Tillis.
The Opry's Bobby Bones-hosted Saturday night program has gone without a live audience since March 14 thanks to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. In that span, guests have included Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
