An executive order from President Donald Trump's final days in the White House adds more details to his longterm vision for a National Garden of American Heroes. The statuary park would honor a long list of "historically significant Americans... who have contributed positively to America throughout our history."
Johnny Cash represents country music on a list with a few additional popular music legends with their own country hits (Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and Nat King Cole). The National Garden will potentially honor at least two great Americans with ties to Cash's legacy (his friend and tour mate Billy Graham plus the Marine in one of Cash's most meaningful songs, Ira Hayes).
Trump first proposed the garden with a July 3, 2020 executive order, which followed a speech at Mount Rushmore during which the president spoke of a park honoring "the greatest Americans to ever live." At the time, he only suggested a handful of historical figures, such as Frederick Douglass, Amelia Earhart, John Adams, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman and Jackie Robinson.
An extended list of 244 honorees includes multiple sports legends (Vince Lombardi, Kobe Bryant, Muhammad Ali), musicians (Whitney Houston), entertainment icons (Walt Disney) and recently deceased figures from America's political and cultural history (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Alex Trebek, Steve Jobs).
Trump's order lays out the creation of an Interagency Task Force for Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes, which will be in charge of completing the park in time for the 250th anniversary of the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence, which lands on July 4, 2026. A United States Department of the Interior official will head the proposed task force.
No specific location's been identified for the park.
