The news of Masalva's delicate health status was shared by fellow actor and friend Mario Morán. In a TikTok video, Morán revealed the gravity of the situation, revealing how the actor was forced into an induced coma after his infection.

"My brother is fighting for his life far away from home," Morán said in the video. He would explain that Masalva was vacationing when he got infected. Masalva's most recent Instagram post shows him enjoying his vacation in the Philippines. At this time, however, it is unknown where he fell ill to the infection and what bacteria is causing it.

As per Mayo Clinic, infections such as encephalitis and meningitis can cause severe symptoms. These include brain, spinal cord, or tissue swelling that can lead to brain damage and coma.

Morán added that they are currently looking to raise funds for Masalva's treatment expenses, linking to a GoFundMe.

"The medical costs are enormous," Morán added. "In a country where everything is more difficult, any help, no matter how small, can make a difference in this very difficult moment. If you can contribute, we thank you from our entire hearts."

Fundraiser

The GoFundMe, as of April 5, has successfully raised more than 1 million Mexican pesos, equating to about $50,000. In an update, the fundraiser's organizer thanked the more than 800 donors who made contributions in Masalva's name.

"Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far," the update reads. "Your generosity and support are essential during these difficult times for Manuel and his loved ones. We deeply appreciate the generosity of acquaintances, friends, and family."

The update details that Manuel Masalva is currently in critical condition. However, the bacteria has been detected and is currently receiving antibiotic treatment, and they are "waiting for him to show signs of improvement."

"Thank you for continuing to share this campaign on your social media so that we can reach more people who may be able to help," the update concludes. "Together, we can make a big difference for Manuel and provide him with the strength and support he needs to recover."

Manuel Masalva played Mexican drug lord Ramón Arellano Félix in Netflix's Narcos: Mexico. His other roles include La Guzmán, Tengo que morir todas las noches, and Divina, está en tu corazón.
