28-year-old Leif Bent was on the career trajectory of a lifetime. He had gained a sizeable online following, having his music played on radio and prepping to release his monumental debut album.
But then, things took a dark turn. What he originally thought was just a bout of the flu turned out to be something much more worrying. Per People, he had gone to the doctors with a sore throat and shortness of breath.
"They gave me antibiotics, and those didn't help," he explained to the outlet. But then, things got more concerning - "spots that looked like bruises" started appearing. After going back to the doctor to get his blood tested, he wasn't sure what to think.
And then the crushing diagnosis came in May 2026 - acute myeloid leukemia. According to Cancer.org, the leukemia started in his bone marrow, affecting his blood. Doctors were shocked to see he was doing as well as he was, given the worrying nature of the cancer.
The bombshell diagnosis came despite the musician's attempts to be healthy. "I haven't had a sip of alcohol in a couple of years," he lamented. "I've always been working out, eating healthy, on that whole sort of vibe... and I don't have any genetic factors, no nothing. It's just a one in a million chance."

He Hid His Cancer From Fans
He explained that despite the several rounds of chemotherapy really affecting him, he didn't want to tell people.
"I was scared to share it, to be honest," he admitted. "I was scared to make it public, it felt weird."
"Like, you always share, like, pretty moments on, on social media, and so I was like, 'Oh, this achievement, and that new song.' And this is, like, like, I can't not post anything for six months, or, like, resurface old content or something like that."
But he eventually realized that that wasn't the best thing to be doing - so he made an unexpected post on social media. It was him, in his hospital bed, singing a heartwarming song of his, "Heavy Smile". And it went viral - fans everywhere loved it.
"I felt like that song, that situation, and just the rawness of me just playing it like, acoustic in the hospital room, I guess clicked and reached so many people and hopefully inspired so many people."
