Morgan Freeman is experimenting with somewhat of a career change. The man with the most memorable voice in Hollywood has announced that he's releasing a blues album. His debut single is set for imminent release, too. Freeman will operate as a narrator on the album, rather than a vocalist.

"According to a press release, the 12-track album is a 100-year cinematic journey through blues," PEOPLE reported. "Freeman, a producer and narrator on the record, is joined by Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, and Shemekia Copeland. The Chineke! Orchestra is also featured on the record."
Freeman is a huge fan of the Blues. As part of the press release, he recalled the first time he ever heard the genre, dating back to his childhood.
"I heard the blues for the first time on my grandmother's porch in the Mississippi Delta, and it has never left me," he said.
The debut single from the album will be titled Death Letter Blues. Mahal is a prominent part of the track, operating as the lead vocalist and playing the guitar.
"Having Taj Mahal kick off this album with a cover of Son House's classic 'Death Letter Blues' strikes the perfect tone for the introduction of this album. Releasing this on Juneteenth is not just symbolic — it is the truth of where this music comes from and who made it. I hope people listen and remember," Freeman said in the press release, via PEOPLE.
Morgan Freeman Is Still Active in the Acting World, Too
Despite focusing on the upcoming album, Freeman, 89, is still an active member of Hollywood. His last role came in 2025, when he voiced the character of James Forten on The American Revolution. He also played Thaddeus Bradley in Now You See Me: Now You Don't, which was also released in 2025.
Throughout his career, Freeman has been involved in over 150 movies, with IMDb citing 152 acting credits to his name. His segue into the music industry, even if only fleeting, is just proof of Freeman's undoubted talent for entertainment.
The album is scheduled for release on August 7.
