A car drove into a crowd in Munich, Germany, on Thursday, reportedly injuring at least 28 people, according to ABC News. Per the outlet, "'The driver was able to be secured on site and currently poses no further danger,' police said in a post in German on social media. Bavarian state Premier Markus Söder told journalists that at least 28 people were injured. The incident is being treated as a 'suspected attack,' Söder said."

A trade union rally was in progress at the time. Law enforcement personnel were present already at Stilgmaierplatz. The driver allegedly "overtook a police vehicle with his car" just prior to the incident. He is thought to have acted on his own.
Among those badly hurt is a two-year-old child. A spokesperson for the medical facility where that child is being treated, the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital. said, "Doctors are currently fighting for the toddler's life."
The Suspect Is Believed To Be An Afghan Asylum Seeker
Someone has been detained in the incident. The person's name has not been made public. The individual is thought to be a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker. No motive for the incident has been announced at this time.
Police were already aware of this person because of previous "drugs and shoplifting offenses," per the outlet.
Authorities Are Continuing To Investigate The Car Incident
According to ABC News, "Florian Volm, a spokesperson for the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office, told ABC News that the Bavarian Central Office for Extremism and Terrorism of the Attorney General's Office is 'investigating today's incident to find possible motives.'"
Munich's Mayor Is Stunned, Expressed Sympathy For the Victims
The mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, voiced his thoughts to reporters. He said,that "many people have been injured, including children. I am deeply shocked. My thoughts are with the injured. The police have arrested the driver of the vehicle, but the exact circumstances are still unclear."
