The reason? A software glitch that can cause an attached trailer's tail lights, turn signals, and brakes to fail.
Ford Says the Recall Affects Its Trucks, Vans, and SUVs
As reported by CBS News, the faulty software can cause a loss of communication between the towing vehicle and the trailer. This usually happens when the vehicle first starts. In a statement, Ford said that the trailer's lights and turn signals won't turn on. The brake function could also stop working.
If this communication loss happens, the driver will see a "Trailer Brake Module Fault" message. Also, the turn signal will begin to rapidly flash, and the "Blind Spot Assist System fault" message may also appear.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this issue can increase the risk of a crash.
"Inoperable trailer lighting and trailer braking functions can reduce a driver's ability to control an attached trailer and make the attached trailer less visible to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash," the agency said.
This recall includes Ford trucks, vans and SUVs with model years ranging from 2021-2026. A majority of the vehicles affected by the recall are Ford F-150 and F-250 pick-ups. These models make up more than 3.4 million of the affected vehicles. The full list of the vehicles included in the recall and their model years is below.

What's Next?
Ford said that it plans to issue a remote, automatic software update for those vehicles affected by the recall in May. Drivers will receive notice once it is complete. Owners can also take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have it repaired free of charge.
The manufacturer, based in Dearborn, Michigan, said it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fires related to the glitch. It added that it began investigating the faulty software in October 2025.
