On their first night in the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham Resort, a family of four enjoyed the buffet. However, within a few hours, they were all chronically sick. They took themselves to bed but were awoken at 6 am the next morning with vomiting and cramps.
The food poisoning had taken hold, and within a day the mother and son were pronounced dead. However, the $10 million lawsuit claims that the hotel did little to help the family in their time of need.
Initially, the resort told them to visit the on-site clinic for their sickness. But, in the state they were in, this wasn't possible. Eventually, after begging for help, they were taken to the local hospital in an ambulance. By this point, the food poisoning had progressed too far, and the mother and son died only hours later.
Resort Food Poisoning Delays Cost Mom And Son Precious Life-Saving Minutes
The lawsuit claims that the resort lacked proper hygiene and emergency procedures and did not respond in a timely manner to the family's health needs. Because of their tardiness surrounding the emergency situation, the family lost precious time that could have saved the mother and son.
The father spoke out about the ordeal, recounting how difficult it was to tell his son about the tragedy. Telling his boy that he would never see his brother and mom again was "the worst thing a father and a husband will ever have to do."
He had to witness the whole ordeal, going to the hospital along with them. They died quickly from food poisoning. "They degraded and then my son passed away ... and then very shortly after, my wife passed away," he remembered. He was unable to do anything to help them as the poisoning had already run too far through their bodies.
The food poisoning from the resort cost a mom and son their lives. If a quicker response or better food hygiene practices been in place, they would likely still be alive.
