A devastating tragedy occurred in which a mother and her 1-year-old baby lost their lives. The worst part of it all was that it could have been prevented. With proper smoke alarms they could have potentially been saved. This mom and her baby did not need to die in a fire. However because the Airbnb allegedly lied about their smoke detectors, that was the outcome.

Mom And Baby Die In Fire

Shannon Hubbard, her husband, and their two children decided to rent an Airbnb home in Clinton, N.Y back in October of 2024. However, their trip turned daunting very quickly. While Shannon and her husband were out on the back patio, they noticed smoke coming from the home.
Shannon told her husband to call 911 as she rushed inside to save the children. People Magazine shared that "The NYSP, East Clinton Fire Department and the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division responded to the scene." Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.
Although first responders were able to locate Shannon and her children on the second floor of the residence, they had sustained serious injuries from the fire. They were removed from the house and transported to a local hospital. While Shannon's son, Jack, was able to heal from his injuries, Shannon and her daughter Maggie were not as fortunate. They succumbed to the injuries that they sustained from the fire.
Airbnb Lied About Smoke Detectors
Upon further investigation of the property, the NYSP found that the Airbnb was "not properly equipped with functional smoke detectors." Therefore, the location was "in violation of fire and building codes." Furthermore, People shared that "fire investigators concluded that the blaze originated in the chimney flue and was not intentionally set."
Perhaps if there had been proper smoke detectors in the home, the finally would have been alerted earlier, and the tragedy would not have happened. Dennis and Meredith Darcy , the owners of the Airbnb have both been charged with " two counts of manslaughter for the deaths of Shannon Hubbard and her 1-year-old daughter Maggie Hubbard."
