MLB Player Released From Team After Bringing Beer Into Dugout

Nick Castellanos has learned a lesson the hard way. The rebel right fielder was reportedly let go by the Philadelphia Phillies, per MLB.com. He was already in the doghouse because he brought a beer into the dugout during a game against the Miami Marlins on June 16, 2025. That is clearly not allowed. Now Castellanos and the team have parted ways for good. Each side aired their version of events.

The Phillies Had Their Fill of Castellanos

Dave Dombrowski, the team's president of baseball operations, explained what went haywire between Castellanos and the Phillies. It seemed like he was exasperated to the hilt by this player's antics and attitude. "I think that we all felt that it was probably in the best interest, to have a change of scenery," he said per the outlet. They had previously attempted to trade him without success.

Dombrowski denied that the beer episode was the sole cause of Castellanos' release. "I don't think it's necessarily one incident. I just think sometimes you're in a situation where you're around day in and day out, things just don't work at a particular time."

What Prompted Castellanos To Grab a Beer

Per the outlet, the Phillies were ahead in their game with the Marlins. Rob Thomson, the team's manager, removed Castellanos from the game reportedly "for defensive purposes." Angry at the move, he allegedly talked back sharply to several coaches, unhappy over the decision. That turn of events evidently prompted him to grab a brew at the wrong time in the wrong place.

Castellanos posted a lengthy, emotional, handwritten letter about the situation on Instagram. He showed pictures of the letter's actual pages. Concerning his Miami misstep, Castellanos wrote, "As a veteran of the game of baseball, there are rules, and I broke one in Miami." He thanked his "teammates and Howie [Kendrick] for taking the beer out of my hands before I could take a sip."

Castellanos then met with Dave Dombrowski and Rob Thomson. He wrote that he said he was sorry "for letting my emotions get the best of me." Castellanos was benched for the next game.

He added this message. "I love this game, I love bring a teammate and I am addicted to winning. I will learn from this."

Fans Voiced Their Support of Him on Social Media

Maybe Castellanos alienated the Phillies' management, but he captured the hearts and minds of many fans. The comments they posted show their immense affection for him as he departs their city.
