Hear Miranda Lambert's Boisterous New Song 'Mess With My Head'

"Mess With My Head," the latest single from Miranda Lambert's long-awaited seventh album, shifts her take no prisoners attitude and producer Jay Joyce's rock tendencies into overdrive. It begrudgingly weighs the benefits of ill-advised experiences while sounding like a cross between The Cars or Tom Petty and modern pop production.

"I wrote it and I loved it, but I wasn't necessarily positive — could I pull it off and would it sound like me?," Lambert told Rolling Stone Country's Jon Freeman. "Not every song you write fits in your wheelhouse. And this one was a little different, but I love it. It's got the rock & roll vibe that I crave. I find myself doing cover songs sometimes in my shows with that vibe because I love that vibe and I feel like now I have one of my own songs where it fits in the set. And Jay Joyce is the exact person to execute something like this especially, not just the whole record, but this song."

It continues a fiery yet fun trend among Lambert's newer songs. In July, she revealed the catchy slice of parental wisdom "It All Comes Out in The Wash" along with the punk rock stomper "Locomotive."

Each bring a different energy than Lambert's introspective and brilliant 2016 album The Weight of These Wings.

"I always have a little bit of cheeky sarcasm in my songs and records," she told Rolling Stone Country. "I feel like I missed that a little bit on The Weight of These Wings. And I also needed to have fun. There were some fun moments on The Weight of These Wings, but just that whole portion of my life and art was not the funnest time. With this one I just wanted to cut loose a little bit and get back to the me that was willing to have fun with it and make fun of myself."

"Mess With My Head" Lyrics

I had the palace looking nice and neat
Two feather pillows with expensive sheets
Sitting so pretty?...on?...my velvet couch
Before?...you came around

You treat my mind?...like a hotel room
And I know why I gave the keys to you

I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head

Maybe it's wrong but it feels right to me
Reveling in reverse psychology
You complicate it with your lying lips
I'm waiting on a kiss

I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my bed
Waking up to a wreck with blue jeans on the floor
If it ain't love then I like it better than before
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my

You treat my mind like a hotel room
And I know why I gave the keys to you

I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my bed
Waking up to a wreck with blue jeans on the floor
If it ain't love then I like it better than before
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
