Miranda Lambert recently joined Brent Cobb for a surprise performance of their "Old Shit." Lambert recorded the tune for her 2014 album Platinum.
Cobb's show at Nashville's Basement East was going swimmingly. He gave an intro to the song, talking about its origins. Cobb wrote the tune with Neil Mason, a drummer for the Cadillac Three. He said the whole thing started with the line about "splitting logs, smoking hogs and feeding leftovers to a three-legged dog."
Admittedly, it's a weird line to bring to a co-write. But it's just some of that "old shit" Cobb liked singing about. As he prepared to ramp into the intro, Cobb then introduced Lambert. She brought along noted harmonica player Mondo Saenz.
Beer in hand and beanie on head, Lambert rocked it. Even if it came unrehearsed, as Cobb noted.
How cool to see songs performed by the original writers. And then add the megastar singers who cut the song on top of it? The crowd at the modest Basement East in Nashville got a real treat.
Of course, Cobb is friends with plenty of country royalty. He's written for Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Little Big Town and plenty more. And his cousin, Dave Cobb, produces some of today's most critically acclaimed acts.
