Florida House Sitter Accused of Stealing Military Member's Dog and Leaving it to Die

A Colorado airman’s missing dog was found dead after a man hired to house-sit during deployment was arrested more than 2,000 miles away.

In early April, police launched an investigation involving a U.S. military airman whose dog and car vanished while he was deployed overseas.

Andrew Beckham said he hired a man to house-sit at his home in Aurora while he was away on duty.

Shortly after, the man allegedly disappeared along with Beckham's belongings.

Andrew Jansen, 28, has now been arrested in connection with the case.

U.S. Military Member Devastated After Dog Found Dead

In a heartbreaking turn, Beckham's 11-year-old husky, Maverick, was later found dead inside an abandoned vehicle.

Authorities located Jansen hiding in Miami-Dade County on Saturday. More than 2,100 miles away from the Colorado home where he had allegedly been staying.

"I wish his family would have come forward about Andy's location so I could have had a chance in saving Maverick," Beckham told the New York Post. "I'm relieved he is custody now, and not possibly hurting other people."

Beckham rushed home on April 22 to help search for his dog after learning Maverick had disappeared.

The dog's body was tragically discovered on May 2 inside the missing vehicle, which had been left in the private garage of a luxury apartment complex in Denver.

"He was trapped in the car for a long time," Beckham told CBS Miami. "He had a lot of blood on his face. They're still trying to figure out why and what happened."

Suspect Expected to Be Extradited Back to Colorado

Beckham previously explained that he found Jansen through Trusted House Sitters, a service that connects pet owners with sitters.

Security footage from the property allegedly showed Jansen leaving the home with Maverick and driving away in Beckham's vehicle without notifying him.

Beckham also revealed that roughly an hour before the disappearance, Jansen contacted police claiming someone was attempting to break into the property.

After that call, all communication reportedly stopped.

Following Maverick's death, Beckham said he had received few updates until a local Florida reporter informed him that Jansen had been arrested.

According to CBS Miami, Aurora police issued warrants accusing Jansen of felony motor vehicle theft and general theft.

Reports state that Jansen was arrested at Jackson South Hospital. He was attempting to visit his father after allegedly interfering with a medical emergency call earlier that morning.

He remains in custody in Miami-Dade County and is expected to be extradited back to Colorado.

Beckham said he rescued Maverick as a puppy while stationed in Spain. He had spent 11 years with the dog, describing him as his "best buddy for a long time."
