Gilley has kept a relatively low profile since 2009, when he crushed four vertebrae when a piece of furniture fell on top of him while helping a friend move. The incident caused him to become temporarily paralyzed, but physical therapy has helped him to walk and perform again.

Most recently, Gilley performed a lengthy set of performances titled the Urban Cowboy Show at his Branson theater with Johnny Lee.
