The Lethal Weapon actor apologized after his appearance at FanExpo Canada over the weekend. During a Q&A session, it looked like the 70-year-old was mocking the sign language interpreter on the platform.
Fans Called Out Mel Gibson
In a video of the interview, which took place on Saturday, Aug. 29, Gibson comes out from behind a curtain and makes his way toward his chair. On the way to his seat, it appears he is imitating the interpreter in front of the audience.
Social media was quick to respond after the video went viral. One user wrote, "Mel Gibson mocking ASL to the deaf community in his fan meeting event. This is quite disappointing, because deaf fans are there to support him but now mocking deaf people. WTF?!"
Another user added, "What dysfunction causes a brain to need to be casually cruel for no reason?"
This is far from the first time Gibson has been in trouble for his behavior. Back in 2006, he made anti-Semitic remarks while being arrested for driving under the influence. Four years later, he was recorded allegedly making racist remarks to his girlfriend.
The "Lethal Weapon" Actor Issued an Apology
PEOPLE shared an apology issued by Gibson today, Aug. 31.
"Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight, your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed," it read. "There was no intended maliciousness attached, and I certainly apologize to anyone who was upset by it."
Despite the controversy surrounding his career, Gibson remains an in-demand actor. During his session at FanExpo Canada, the actor talked about his most famous roles, including Mad Max and Lethal Weapon.
He later stepped behind the camera in the 1990s to direct. He won the Oscar for Best Director for his epic, Braveheart. Next year, the sequel to his film The Passion of the Christ is scheduled to premiere. It is titled The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One. Part Two will hit theaters in 2028.
