Mavericks Fans Hold Mock Funeral After Luka Doncic Trade

Trading Luka Doncic is truly one of the most bewildering moments in sports history. The Dallas Mavericks moved him and fellow players Markieef Morris and Maxi Kleber to the Los Angeles Lakers. In return, LA gives up star center Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and the Lakers' 2029 first-round pick to Dallas. The Utah Jazz comes in to help take the trade to the finish line by taking on some filler.

What makes the move so surprising is that Luka had taken over as the face of sports in Dallas. He gave the city hope in an era where the Dallas Cowboys have truly sunken into punchline territory. He took over for Dirk Nowitzki, a Mavericks lifer who passed the baton to the Slovenian great.

Fans thought Doncic would follow suit and he was vocal about wanting to bring a championship to the city. But Dallas GM Nico Harrison shocks all parties involved by suddenly ditching the face of the franchise. Now, fans are protesting the Luka trade and hold a mock funeral for the franchise.

Dallas Mavericks Fans Protest Luka Doncic Trade Outside Arena

Recently, Dallas Mavericks fans are lamenting the loss of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Images can be seen of a crowd gathering around a casket with the star player's likeness on it as the fans mourn the drastic shift for the franchise. Additionally, there's a video of fans outside the arena chanting to sell the team. You can see that below.

You can tell just how much Luka deeply cared for the city and how much the love they showed meant to him. In a statement after the trade, he grapples with all the conflicting emotions that come with leaving a place you thought was your forever home. "Seven years ago, I came here as a teenager to pursue my dream of playing basketball at the highest level. I thought I'd spend my career here and I wanted so badly to bring you a championship," Luka writes. "The love and support you all have given me is more than i could have ever dreamed of. For a young kid from Slovenia coming to the U.S. for the first time, you made North Texas feel like home. In good times and bad, from injuries to the NBA Finals, your support never changed. Thank you not only for sharing my joy in our best moments, but also for lifting me up when I needed it most."
