Massachusetts is in mourning. Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, lost his life early on Wednesday, May 6. He perished when his cruiser was struck by an alleged wrong-way driver. Even though his shift was over, bravery does not go by the clock. Trooper Trainor made the ultimate sacrifice so others could be safe.

The crash reportedly occurred at about 2 a.m. on Route 1 in Lynnfield. Per NBC10 Boston, Trooper Trainor's shift officially ended at 2 a.m. However, a 9-1-1 call came in regarding a wrong-way driver just one minute later at 2:01 a.m. Trooper Trainor immediately hastened to assist, thereby putting his own life on the line. The lethal crash took place at 2:04 a.m. He clearly sought to avert a tragedy, never dreaming that he would be involved in one himself.
The other driver, who also died, has been identified by the Essex County District Attorney's Office. He was Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale. Why he was traveling the wrong way has not been made public at this time.

It is a powerful symbol of grief, valor, and selflessness.The sorrowful statement reads in part, "While nothing will ever repair the pain we feel today, we make a solemn promise to never forget Trooper Trainor and his service to the Commonwealth. Kevin served as a Corrections Officer in Essex County before joining the State Police as a member of the 88th Recruit Training Troop...[He] patrolled our roads with a singular focus: keeping the people of this Commonwealth safe."

The governor posted her sad thoughts on
Facebook. She wrote, "I am heartbroken by the tragic death of a Massachusetts State Police Trooper who died on the line of duty overnight in Lynnfield...Today, Massachusetts is mourning one of those [MSP] heroes...."In fact, she also reportedly met with the family of Trooper Trainor, according to NBS10 Boston. Additionally, Governor Healey said, "Trooper Trainor died a hero, and were it not for his actions, there would be a lot of grieving families today, and that's a trooper doing his job."
