Since the early nineties, Texas native Mark Chesnutt has been supplying a modern spin on traditional country. Over the years, he’s charted twenty top 10 hits and covered countless country legends both on stage and in the studio. Now, Chesnutt is back with a new album and a fitting tribute to one of country’s most beloved artists.
Tradition Lives, his first full-length LP in eight years, was released earlier this year. The record’s bonus track is a cover of a tune written by Red Lane and recorded by Haggard for his 1985 album Kern River. Chesnutt just released a video for the track, which features videos and images of Haggard from throughout his career.
It’s a tribute that I’m sure Haggard would happily tip his hat to. Although this brilliant cover is a stand-out track, Tradition Lives is a record filled with pure country gems. It’s a shame that artists like Chesnutt have been somewhat pushed out of the charts since the 90s with the rise of more pop-leaning mainstream artists. Sure, that might all be in the midst of changing. But sometimes it takes a track like this to remind us just what we’ve been missing.
