The South is known for its hospitality, amazing food and beautiful cities. Sadly, it has also become known as the region with the highest rates of obesity.
According to the annual State of Obesity report, Arkansas had the highest rate of adult obesity compared to the rest of the U.S., with a shocking 35.9 percent. West Virginia followed closely behind with 35.7 percent and Mississippi came in third with 35.5 percent. Texas ranked 11th in the nation with 31.9 percent. You can view additional statistics on the map’s source page.
So where did your state rank on this map? The report created an interactive version of its results, which allows visitors to click on their states, displaying an easy-to-read version of its findings. You may be shocked to find out that every single state has an obesity rate above 20 percent, with 22 states weighing in with rates higher than 30 percent.
If you click around the map, you can see how rates have risen from recent years and which states have improved or increased their obesity levels. Aside from the cool presentation, the overall rise in obesity shown by the data is pretty saddening. Hopefully, we as Americans can put a bigger emphasis on staying fit so we can see a decline when next year’s report is released.
