In a bizarre twist, a suspect used a low-speed lawn mower as his getaway vehicle after attempting to kill several people during a home invasion.
Woodrow Allen Smith, 62, allegedly fired his shotgun at a woman and two kids inside a residence on Friday in Sanford. He also allegedly choked one of the children and threatened to fire his weapon at them.
Hoping to avoid a lengthy jail sentence, Smith hopped on a lawnmower and started booking it at a blistering pace of 5-8 miles per hour, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office and The Charlotte Observer.
"The Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to a... domestic disturbance in which an individual was reportedly firing a shotgun at people inside a residence," the sheriff's office said, according to the outlet.
Despite his daring escape, Smith was later captured by police and taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Smith was charged with multiple serious offenses. His charges include felony attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony discharging a firearm into occupied property and felony possession of a firearm by a felon. Smith was also slapped with misdemeanor simple assault.
According to officials, the mulleted would-be criminal is currently being held without bond.
Smith Could Serve Life Sentence For Actions
The maximum sentence for attempted first-degree murder is typically life imprisonment or a term of 99 years, depending on the jurisdiction.
Felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill carries a similar penalty.
Investigators did not reveal Smith's motives or his relationship to the woman and kids.
The incident took place on Stone Hill Lane in Sanford, about 40 miles away from Raleigh.
According to eCourts, Smith was convicted of distributing/selling cocaine in January 1996 in North Carolina. He was sentenced to two years of probation.
