Man Rebuilds 90s Computer Piece by Piece, Discovers Decades-Old Secret on Hard Drive

We all remember the first time we got our hands on a computer. This old hard drive shows some pretty nostalgic stuff!

Do you remember the first time you got your hands on a computer? It's likely the case that your first experience with a Windows machine - well, a computer at all, really - was on Windows 95, or 98. They were released as computers were gradually becoming more affordable for the average family.

And, as such, there's a lot of nostalgia for that era. Whether it's just the soul-soothing sounds of a CRT monitor and a clicky hard drive as you spin up an old game or the simpler Internet, the whole thing just feels warm in a way that's hard to place.

And, per Dexerto, that's exactly why YouTuber TrashBench decided to revive his old '90s computer. Of course, he had the machine when he was a kid - so the original thing wasn't there.

Instead, he decided to look around the Internet for old pieces of hardware to clobber together to get a period-accurate Windows 95 machine up and running.

The specs are a blast from the past, too - featuring a 200MHz Pentium processor, 32MB of RAM, and a Sound Blaster 16 sound card. (For reference - your phone, or even your smart fridge, has better specs than that!)

He Found Decades-Old Secrets on a Hard Drive He Used for the Computer

Of course, given the computer was built using second-hand parts, it's no surprise that the hard drive had data already on it. But it was the specific items on that hard drive that are just a little wild.

The hard drive had Windows 98 rather than 95. But, rather than wiping it "to be more period accurate", he instead snooped around. And what he found was absolutely golden.

"There's some dude's science homework on there from 2001, and his Doom 2 cheats". The Documents folder makes it look like the hard drive used to belong to a family computer.

Some of the titles of Word documents are as follows:

  • My Suburb Assignment
  • Doom2 cheats
  • Holiday & Sick Days
  • Factors in the emergence of a dictatorship

The whole thing definitely looks like it was used by several people, that's for sure.

What a blast from the past, right? It reminded the YouTuber of a simpler time. "There's been so many times during filming... Where I've been playing a game and just gotten lost in it for an hour."
