Man Pushes 61-Year-Old Onto Subway Tracks After Smoking Dispute: Police

A wanted suspect is being accused of shoving a 61-year-old man onto the Brooklyn subway tracks in New York City. Reportedly, the unidentified man allegedly pushed the man after becoming enraged due to the victim's smoking on the platform.

According to the New York Post, the incident took place on Saturday, March 29, at around 11:50 p.m. While the victim was standing on a train platform a the Atlantic Avenue - Barclays Center station, the suspect approached him. Visibly worked up, he began confronting the victim because he was smoking at the platform.

Both men began a heated argument that escalated dramatically quickly as the suspect allegedly shoved the 61-year-old man onto the train tracks. Fortunately, witnesses managed to help the victim and managed to get him back onto the platform, according to police. He was transported to the New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Reportedly, he was in stable condition.

As of Tuesday, April 1, the suspect has not been caught or identified. The NYPD has, however, released footage of the suspect. He is shown wearing a black jacket over a black hoodie, as well as ripped jeans and white sneakers. Additionally, the suspect had brown hair and a goatee, with the top of his hair dyed blonde.

Past Subway Incidents

This incident comes months after a 23-year-old man, identified as Kamel Hawkins, was similarly accused of pushing another man onto the Manhattan subway tracks. According to CNN, the incident took place on New Year's Eve 2024 at the 18th Street train station.

Fortunately, the victim survived and was not struck by an incoming train. Authorities confirmed that the victim fell on the trucks next to the passing train. However, the victim suffered a head injury and a broken rib. Hawkins was charged with second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault, as per the NYPD.

The same day that the incident took place, the NYPD revealed the identity of Debrina Kawan, the 57-year-old victim who was set on fire and subsequently killed. Sebastian Zapeta-Calil was charged with first- and second-degree murder and arson for allegedly burning Kawan alive at a New York City subway station.
