During an independence day parade in Highland Park, Illinois, Crimo opened fire on the celebrating crowd. From a nearby rooftop, he used a Smith & Wesson M&P15 to fire 83 rounds into the crowd. He killed a total of seven people and wounded 48 others.
He then fled, considering attacking another 4th of July celebration, but decided against it. Robert Crimo was then detained 8 hours later and charged with the mass shooting, but he initially pleaded not guilty.
Consequently, Robert Crimo was accused of 117 felony counts. He was indicted with three counts of murder for each killed person and one count of attempted murder and battery for each of the 48 wounded. He initially pleaded not guilty but recently changed his plea.
4th Of July Mass Shooting Attacker Faces Life Imprisonment
The prosecutors at the trial of Crimo for the 4th of July mass shooting had a wealth of evidence. This included CCTV from the scene, witness statements, and various interrogations in which he admitted the crime.
He since pled guilty, standing silently beside his lawyer as the sentence was read out. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the brutal murder of the 4th of July crowds. The victims ranged in age from 8 to 88. He fired into the crowds without any consideration or objective.
Robert Crimo was only 21 when he committed the mass shooting at the 4th of July parade. As a result, his father had been implicated in the crime. He sponsored his son's gun license even though he had previously threatened to "kill everyone."
The investigation into Crimo after his attack revealed a troubled past. He had attempted suicide in the past and had also been spoken to by police after threatening a family member. He was also a regular at far-right marches, often dressing as Where's Waldo.
Yet again, a mentally unstable young person was able to get their hands on a deadly weapon and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, resulting in the death of innocent US citizens.
