Tragedy has struck the University of Florida just days before the official start of the college football season.

An unidentified man died after jumping off a concrete beat inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, home of the Gators, on the morning of Monday, Aug. 31.
The Man Was Found on a Concrete Beam in the College Football Stadium
As reported by the New York Post, at around 9:50 a.m. on Monday, police responded to reports that a 51-year-old man was standing on a ledge at the stadium in Gainesville, Florida.
He was then found on a concrete beam in the west concourse of the stadium. Police tried to negotiate with him to get him down safely.
The man then stepped off and fell an estimated 60 to 80 feet. He landed on the concourse near Gate 4 of the stadium.
Was the Man an Employee at the University?
The man was reportedly still conscious and breathing after his fall. First responders attempted "life-saving measures" on him. However, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m.
No one else was inside the stadium when the incident occurred. Officials are calling it an isolated incident. The man's name is being withheld until his family is notified of what happened.
Reports state that the man was not connected with the University of Florida and was likely homeless.
This incident comes less than a year after a 19-year-old student at The Ohio State University jumped to his death at the school's stadium. The Connecticut native was discovered at the northeast corner of Ohio Stadium the morning of Sep. 26, 2025. The death was ruled a suicide.
Last year, the Florida Gators had a 4-8 record. Hopes are considerably higher for the school's 2026 college football season. The team received 51 votes in the AP preseason Top 25 ranking. While the team is 27th overall, it does show a positive path forward.
The Gators' first home game is this Saturday, Sep. 5, against Florida Atlantic.
