A man is dead after being dragged to his death in a freak accident on the New York City subway.

The incident occurred in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area in Brooklyn on Monday evening (September 29). It occurred during the heart of rush hour.
Man Dragged to Death in Freak Subway Accident
57-year-old Yaw Boahene was getting off the Utica Avenue A train. When his backpack became trapped in the doors just a little after 6:00. According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
According to investigators, the 57-year-old was dragged a distance that equaled seven subway cars. His momentum was only stopped after he crashed into a wall at the end of the station that leads into the subway tunnel. Eventually landing on the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene (ABC 7).
ABC News spoke with one eyewitness who was on the scene. Gabriel Broadus was coming home from school when she witnessed the "horrific" incident that has since left her traumatized. Broadus told Eyewitness News that when other people on the subway platform began to see what was happening, they went into a panic. However, she called the police for help.
"Conductors are supposed to look out and make sure that people aren't in this situation. That's the whole thing; they do a little thumbs up, that's what's supposed to happen. And that didn't happen," Broadus said to the outlet. "There was no one to turn to. And we know the police, they can come as quickly as they can, but the train was already at Nostrand Avenue at that point, like what, like what help is that going to be?"
Subway accidents are nothing new for the MTA. In 2023, 241 people were struck by subway trains. Ninety-seven were fatal. The MTA's 2024 Annual Report on Litigation shows MTA New York City Transit carried 12,832 active personal injury claims and lawsuits as of December 31, 2024 (AEE Law)
